River is gorgeous Golden Retriever pup. Unfortunately, just before he was sold, a heart defect was discovered, making him unfit for sale. His breeder couldn't afford testing or treatment, so he was relinquished to New Beginnings Pet Rescue at 8 weeks of age.

As it turns out, after extensive testing, we were given the sad news that River has both severe PS (Pulmonic stenosis) and severe SAS (SUBVALVULAR AORTIC STENOSIS) . This means that no surgery can help River, like we had hoped and prayed.
River will need to see the cardiac specialist every 2 to 3 months to undergo an exam, and an EKG to check for arrhythmia. He will also need a wave Doppler (cardiac ultrasound) performed by the cardiologist at least 2 times a year. We have started River on a Beta Blocker drug in hopes that it will lessen the strain to his heart. The amount of medication will change each month as he grows.
We are told that some dogs with the defects that River has could "possibly" live 2 years. We were also told to give him the best life we can while he is with us, and we plan to do just that!!
River doesn't know that his heart is not working like it should. He is having so much fun playing with the other dogs in his foster home, swimming, meeting new dogs and doing what other puppies are allowed to do.

UPDATES
Update: Sept. 2009.
We did not receive the news that we had hoped for at the cardiologist. River was only scheduled for an EKG, but when the doctor saw the results, he ordered a cardic ultrasound right away.
The diagnosis at this visit was that one side of River's heart has gotten worse. We will be increasing his medication again as long as he tolerates it.
Update: 12-27-09
River is still eating and playing like most puppies. River has been having lots of fun! He saw his first snow this year and has had a blast playing and digging in it. River is due for another visit to his cardiologist in January of 2010. Check "River As He Grows" on our home page for more pictures of River the wonder dog! :
